Simon reported that ndo_change_mtu() methods were never
updated to use WRITE_ONCE(dev->mtu, new_mtu) as hinted
in commit 501a90c945 ("inet: protect against too small
mtu values.")
We read dev->mtu without holding RTNL in many places,
with READ_ONCE() annotations.
It is time to take care of ndo_change_mtu() methods
to use corresponding WRITE_ONCE()

In order to pass EEE link modes beyond bit 32 to userspace we have to
complement the 32 bit bitmaps in struct ethtool_eee with linkmode
bitmaps. Therefore, similar to ethtool_link_settings and
ethtool_link_ksettings, add a struct ethtool_keee. In a first step
it's an identical copy of ethtool_eee. This patch simply does a
s/ethtool_eee/ethtool_keee/g for all users.
No functional change intended.

The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate
of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus.
As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they
"temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h
and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include
files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and
replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to
explicitly include the correct includes.

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored
and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a
quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this
quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns
void.
Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove
callback to the void returning variant.

We tell driver developers to always pass NAPI_POLL_WEIGHT
as the weight to netif_napi_add(). This may be confusing
to newcomers, drop the weight argument, those who really
need to tweak the weight can use netif_napi_add_weight().

Since commit 94dd016ae5 ("bond: pass get_ts_info and SIOC[SG]HWTSTAMP
ioctl to active device") the user could get bond active interface's
PHC index directly. But when there is a failover, the bond active
interface will change, thus the PHC index is also changed. This may
break the user's program if they did not update the PHC timely.
This patch adds a new hwtstamp_config flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEX.
When the user wants to get the bond active interface's PHC, they need to
add this flag and be aware the PHC index may be changed.
With the new flag. All flag checks in current drivers are removed. Only
the checking in net_hwtstamp_validate() is kept.

Most users of ndo_do_ioctl are ethernet drivers that implement
the MII commands SIOCGMIIPHY/SIOCGMIIREG/SIOCSMIIREG, or hardware
timestamping with SIOCSHWTSTAMP/SIOCGHWTSTAMP.
Separate these from the few drivers that use ndo_do_ioctl to
implement SIOCBOND, SIOCBR and SIOCWANDEV commands.
This is a purely cosmetic change intended to help readers find
their way through the implementation.

Devices with RMON support has a 16-bit RDRP counter. It provides: "Receive
dropped packets counter. Increments for frames received which are streamed
to system but are later dropped due to lack of system resources."
To handle more than 2^16 dropped packets, a carry bit in CAR1 register is
set on overflow, so we enable irq when this is set, extending the counter
to 2^64 for handling situations where lots of packets are missed (e.g.
during heavy network storms).

The memset on CAMx is wrong, as it actually unmasks all carry irq's,
which we clearly are not interested in.
The memset on CARx registers is just pointless, as they are W1C.
So let's just stop the memset before CAR1.

Gianfar used to enable all 8 Rx queues (DMA rings) per
ethernet device, even though the controller can only
support 2 interrupt lines at most. This meant that
multiple Rx queues would have to be grouped per NAPI poll
routine, and the CPU would have to split the budget and
service them in a round robin manner. The overhead of
this scheme proved to outweight the potential benefits.
The alternative was to introduce the "Single Queue" polling
mode, supporting one Rx queue per NAPI, which became the
default packet processing option and helped improve the
performance of the driver.
MQ_POLLING also relies on undocumeted device tree properties
to specify how to map the 8 Rx and Tx queues to a given
interrupt line (aka "interrupt group"). Using module parameters
to enable this mode wasn't an option either. Long story short,
MQ_POLLING became obsolete, now it is just dead code, and no
one asked for it so far.
For the Tx queues, multi-queue support (more than 1 Tx queue
per CPU) could be revisited by adding tc MQPRIO support, but
again, one has to consider that there are only 2 interrupt lines.
So the NAPI poll routine would have to service multiple Tx rings.

of_get_mac_address() returns a "const void*" pointer to a MAC address.
Lately, support to fetch the MAC address by an NVMEM provider was added.
But this will only work with platform devices. It will not work with
PCI devices (e.g. of an integrated root complex) and esp. not with DSA
ports.
There is an of_* variant of the nvmem binding which works without
devices. The returned data of a nvmem_cell_read() has to be freed after
use. On the other hand the return of_get_mac_address() points to some
static data without a lifetime. The trick for now, was to allocate a
device resource managed buffer which is then returned. This will only
work if we have an actual device.
Change it, so that the caller of of_get_mac_address() has to supply a
buffer where the MAC address is written to. Unfortunately, this will
touch all drivers which use the of_get_mac_address().
Usually the code looks like:

Sometimes is_valid_ether_addr() is used to test the MAC address.
of_get_mac_address() already makes sure, it just returns a valid MAC
address. Thus we can just test its return code. But we have to be
careful if there are still other sources for the MAC address before the
of_get_mac_address(). In this case we have to keep the
is_valid_ether_addr() call.
The following coccinelle patch was used to convert common cases to the
new style. Afterwards, I've manually gone over the drivers and fixed the
return code variable: either used a new one or if one was already

This patch fixes this by checking for computed LAST fragment size, so a
negative sized fragment is never added.
In order to prevent the newer rx frame from getting corrupted, the FIRST
flag is checked to discard the incomplete older frame.

When PTP timestamping is enabled on Tx, the controller
inserts the Tx timestamp at the beginning of the frame
buffer, between SFD and the L2 frame header. This means
that the skb provided by the stack is required to have
enough headroom otherwise a new skb needs to be created
by the driver to accommodate the timestamp inserted by h/w.
Up until now the driver was relying on the second option,
using skb_realloc_headroom() to create a new skb to accommodate
PTP frames. Turns out that this method is not reliable, as
reallocation of skbs for PTP frames along with the required
overhead (skb_set_owner_w, consume_skb) is causing random
crashes in subsequent skb_*() calls, when multiple concurrent
TCP streams are run at the same time on the same device
(as seen in James' report).
Note that these crashes don't occur with a single TCP stream,
nor with multiple concurrent UDP streams, but only when multiple
TCP streams are run concurrently with the PTP packet flow
(doing skb reallocation).
This patch enforces the first method, by requesting enough
headroom from the stack to accommodate PTP frames, and so avoiding
skb_realloc_headroom() & co, and the crashes no longer occur.
There's no reason not to set needed_headroom to a large enough
value to accommodate PTP frames, so in this regard this patch
is a fix.

the driver receives cloned skbs in large numbers.
skb_cow_head() instead proves to be stable in this scenario,
and not only handles cloned skbs too but it's also more efficient
and widely used in other drivers.
The commit introducing skb_realloc_headroom in the driver
goes back to 2009, commit 93c1285c5d
("gianfar: reallocate skb when headroom is not enough for fcb").
For practical purposes I'm referencing a newer commit (from 2012)
that brings the code to its current structure (and fixes the PTP
case).

Every iteration of for_each_available_child_of_node() decrements
reference count of the previous node, however when control
is transferred from the middle of the loop, as in the case of
a return or break or goto, there is no decrement thus ultimately
resulting in a memory leak.
Fix a potential memory leak in gianfar.c by inserting of_node_put()
before the goto statement.

The driver wrongly assumes that it is the only entity that can set the
SKBTX_IN_PROGRESS bit of the current skb. Therefore, in the
gfar_clean_tx_ring function, where the TX timestamp is collected if
necessary, the aforementioned bit is used to discriminate whether or not
the TX timestamp should be delivered to the socket's error queue.
But a stacked driver such as a DSA switch can also set the
SKBTX_IN_PROGRESS bit, which is actually exactly what it should do in
order to denote that the hardware timestamping process is undergoing.
Therefore, gianfar would misinterpret the "in progress" bit as being its
own, and deliver a second skb clone in the socket's error queue,
completely throwing off a PTP process which is not expecting to receive
it, _even though_ TX timestamping is not enabled for gianfar.
There have been discussions [0] as to whether non-MAC drivers need or
not to set SKBTX_IN_PROGRESS at all (whose purpose is to avoid sending 2
timestamps, a sw and a hw one, to applications which only expect one).
But as of this patch, there are at least 2 PTP drivers that would break
in conjunction with gianfar: the sja1105 DSA switch and the felix
switch, by way of its ocelot core driver.
So regardless of that conclusion, fix the gianfar driver to not do stuff
based on flags set by others and not intended for it.

Before this change of_get_phy_mode() returned an enum,
phy_interface_t. On error, -ENODEV etc, is returned. If the result of
the function is stored in a variable of type phy_interface_t, and the
compiler has decided to represent this as an unsigned int, comparision
with -ENODEV etc, is a signed vs unsigned comparision.
Fix this problem by changing the API. Make the function return an
error, or 0 on success, and pass a pointer, of type phy_interface_t,
where the phy mode should be stored.

Historically, gianfar only used phy-connection-type DT property when
connected to PHY in the rgmii-id mode. It ignored the property otherwise,
relying on the connection type auto-detection carried out by MAC and
providing that reconstructed mode to of_phy_connect(). It also did not
consider alternative phy-mode property at all.
Make the driver properly query DT node for PHY connection type first and
use an obtained value if it was specified there. Otherwise, if a particular
DT relies on connection type auto-detection, fall back to reconstructing
the value from MAC registers, as before.

I've replaced the offending memcpy with ether_addr_copy, because I'm
100% sure, that of_get_mac_address can't return NULL as it returns valid
pointer or ERR_PTR encoded value, nothing else.
I'm hesitant to just change IS_ERR into IS_ERR_OR_NULL check, as this
would make the warning disappear also, but it would be confusing to
check for impossible return value just to make a compiler happy.
I'm now changing all occurencies of memcpy to ether_addr_copy after the
of_get_mac_address call, as it's very likely, that we're going to get
similar reports from kbuild test robot in the future.

There was NVMEM support added to of_get_mac_address, so it could now
return ERR_PTR encoded error values, so we need to adjust all current
users of of_get_mac_address to this new fact.
While at it, remove superfluous is_valid_ether_addr as the MAC address
returned from of_get_mac_address is always valid and checked by
is_valid_ether_addr anyway.

Convert string compares of DT node names to use of_node_name_eq helper
instead. This removes direct access to the node name pointer.
For instances using of_node_cmp, this has the side effect of now using
case sensitive comparisons. This should not matter for any FDT based
system which all of these are.

There are a few MAC/PHYs combinations which now support > 1Gbps. These
may need to make use of link modes with bits > 31. Thus their
supported PHY features or advertised features cannot be implemented
using the current bitmap in a u32. Convert to using a linkmode bitmap,
which can support all the currently devices link modes, and is future
proof as more modes are added.

The method ndo_start_xmit() is defined as returning an 'netdev_tx_t',
which is a typedef for an enum type, so make sure the implementation in
this driver has returns 'netdev_tx_t' value, and change the function
return type to netdev_tx_t.

Don't include in the Rx bytecount of the packet sent up the stack:
the FCB (frame control block), and the padding bytes inserted by
the controller into the frame payload, nor the FCS. All these are
being pulled out of the skb by gfar_process_frame().
This issue is old, likely from the driver's beginnings, however
it was amplified by recent:
commit d903ec7711 ("gianfar: simplify FCS handling and fix memory leak")
which basically added the FCS to the Rx bytecount, and so brought
this to my attention.

Previously, buffer descriptors containing only the frame check sequence
(FCS) were skipped and not added to the skb. However, the page reference
count was still incremented, leading to a memory leak.
Fixing this inside gfar_add_rx_frag() is difficult due to reserved
memory handling and page reuse. Instead, move the FCS handling to
gfar_process_frame() and trim off the FCS before passing the skb up the
networking stack.

When the frame check sequence (FCS) is split across the last two frames
of a fragmented packet, part of the FCS gets counted twice, once when
subtracting the FCS, and again when subtracting the previously received
data.
For example, if 1602 bytes are received, and the first fragment contains
the first 1600 bytes (including the first two bytes of the FCS), and the
second fragment contains the last two bytes of the FCS:
'skb->len == 1600' from the first fragment
size = lstatus & BD_LENGTH_MASK; # 1602
size -= ETH_FCS_LEN; # 1598
size -= skb->len; # -2
Since the size is unsigned, it wraps around and causes a BUG later in
the packet handling, as shown below:

This controller does not support EEE, but it may connect to a PHY
which supports EEE and advertises EEE by default, while its link
partner also advertises EEE. If this happens, the PHY enters low
power mode when the traffic rate is low and causes packet loss.
This patch disables EEE advertisement by default for any PHY that
gianfar connects to, to prevent the above unwanted outcome.

According to LS1021A RM, the value of PAL can be set so that the start of the
IP header in the receive data buffer is aligned to a 32-bit boundary. Normally,
setting PAL = 2 provides minimal padding to ensure such alignment of the IP
header.
However every incoming packet's 8-byte time stamp will be inserted into the
packet data buffer as padding alignment bytes when hardware time stamping is
enabled.
So we set the padding 8+2 here to avoid the flooded alignment faults:

The wrong register is checked for the Tx flow control bit,
it should have been maccfg1 not maccfg2.
This went unnoticed for so long probably because the impact is
hardly visible, not to mention the tangled code from adjust_link().
First, link flow control (i.e. handling of Rx/Tx link level pause frames)
is disabled by default (needs to be enabled via 'ethtool -A').
Secondly, maccfg2 always returns 0 for tx_flow_oldval (except for a few
old boards), which results in Tx flow control remaining always on
once activated.
